Shelter Statistics

Our Goal is to provide for the humane and ethical treatment of all animals in our care, at times this may mean reducing the number of animals we provide care for and this is done in the most humane manner with strong consideration placed on the other animals remaining in our care. In continuing efforts to save lives and improve transparency the Rexburg Animal Shelter is proud to share statistics about our intake and disposition rates.

Please note our best efforts are taken to provide accurate information however:
- There will be some discrepancies between intake and outcome totals as we usually have animals in the shelter on Jan 1st and again on Dec 31st.
- Percentages are calculated against intake totals so may not total 100%.
- Some intakes and dispositions do not easily fall into one of the categories and may not be counted properly.
- We do not separate for owner requested or court ordered Euthanasia so those numbers are also included in the Euthanasia numbers.
- **NEW 2017** We have added a seperate report that allows us to divide adoptable vs not adoptable in our Euthanasia numbers. This is a seperate report based upon entered euthanasia reason and the numbers unfortunatly, do not match perfectly (a reason was not always entered, this is new for us too) Reasons an animal is not adoptable would include, owner request or court order, agression (this includes most feral cats), and contagious or untreatable medical.
- Numbers are numbers, if they are the only measure used to define success, progress or failure, you might be missing the forest for the trees.

* The City of Rexburg received a large grant from PetSmart Charities to Spay or Neuter pet animals which lowered intake numbers and allowed for licensing more animals which also increased RTO rates for future years.

National Averages

It is difficult to give an accurate comparison against national averages because there is not uniformity in the recording of data or in the collection. In general estimates suggest over 7.5 million animals enter shelters across the united states each year. Of these animals, between dogs and cats the numbers are roughly equa
